Hollywood actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson proves that passion and dedication can exceed the numbers game. Disney, known for its obsession with live-action remakes, anticipated a significant win with Moana's summer release. Unfortunately, it didn't match the studio's lofty expectations. Regardless, leading man Johnson expresses a bright outlook on his involvement in the film.

Johnson's late-night conversations with wife Lauren Hashian served to remind him of the larger intent behind making the movie. Johnson's resilience could be a shock to some, but according to People, it's all part of what makes him such a unique figure in Hollywood. He believes in the dimension that goes beyond simple box office revenue. Regarding the film's critical reception, he expressed: "If you love it, great. If you don’t, no problem. [What] really mattered [was that] the culture really stood up."

Johnson recalled that the initial couple of reviews were brilliant, but the film's reception took a turn for the worst from there. Besides earning just over $263 million, critics weren't overly fond of the live-action remake, only giving it a 31% approval rating. Critics agreed that it was an "unnecessary shot-for-shot, beat-for-beat live action remake."

Johnson remains steadfast against this wave of negativity, standing by the film's substantial representation of Polynesian culture. The actor stated, "it’s another [thing] to give Pacific Islanders jobs and opportunities and really represent their culture in a flesh and blood way on screen." He consistently stays true to this stance.

As Johnson views it, the most rewarding aspect is the pride arising from the representation, saying, "Because of me and our kids who can now look at the big screen and go, ‘That’s us for the first time on a big screen. That’s us up there. How cool is that?’"

A staunch advocate for showcasing Polynesian culture, Johnson supports filming in Hawaii as much as he can, even if he isn't directly involved in the production. In 2020, Disney became the first to reach the $1 billion box office mark with its live-action Lilo & Stitch, a success Johnson lauded.

His efforts to represent Hawaii don't stop with Moana. He's currently working on a project together with Martin Scorsese that springs from actual events set on the islands, illuminating a Hawaiian mob boss's rivalry with both local competitors and mainland corporations. According to Johnson, the centerpiece of the film is "the reclamation of Polynesian culture."

In addition to this, Johnson is involved in a few upcoming cinematic ventures, including the much-anticipated sequel to Jumanji: Open World, slated as a Christmas Day release for 2026. Expect to see Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan light up the big screen once again. Parts of Jumanji were filmed in Hawaii, lending yet more on-screen representation to the islands.
