Lights, Camera, IMAX! Big Screen Giant Enjoys a Box Office Boom
- Jul 28, 2025
Oh what a time to be alive for the big screen giant, IMAX! Showcasing films like “Sinners” and “F1”, made possible by their very own cameras, the company is enjoying a real box office boom. The latest quarter earnings have skyrocketed with a 3% lift in revenue to total $91.7 million. This figure winked at last year's $89 million, dished out a high-five and ran straight past it.
But it's not just the earnings figure that has seen a bump. Net income? Oh, it just blossomed, up by 135% to $12 million compared to last year’s $5.1 million for the same quarter. We're seeing double here! Per share, the adjusted earnings reached a savory 26 cents, up 39% from the side dish of 18 cents served up same time last year.
Those Wall Street wizards projected an earnings of 13 cents per share and report revenue of $92.5 million for IMAX but pssst guess what happened? Our big screen friend here overstepped the expectations and we're not complaining!
Like its peers, IMAX’s script featured a few plot twists of its own, courtesy of the pandemic. Though viewing figures dipped, IMAX played the leading role in the recovery narrative. Its charm was a high-quality viewing experience on wider screens. Tech gurus like "Sinners" director Ryan Coogler praises this as the best way to showcase their masterpieces.

Even a slightly less booming film like “Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning” chose IMAX to be their canvas. It slipped into the sprint and helped push IMAX to achieve their highest grossing quarter ever at the North American box office ($143 million) and $281 million globally. Can we get three cheers?
Cherry on top, many of these major films outlined the IMAX creds in their marketing strategies, cozily embedded with the tagline “filmed in IMAX.” We picture every film buff's eyes lighting up as they read those words.
Over this period, IMAX rolled out 36 new systems and unveiled 57 new locations globally in 2025’s first half. CEO Richard Gelfond, confidently spoke of the promise held by upcoming films like “Tron: Ares,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Mortal Kombat II”, all of which are placed on the IMAX palette.
Gelfond jubilantly exclaimed, “The fundamentals of our business are strong, the strength and impact of our brand across the entertainment landscape has reached new highs, and we have tremendous runway with a strong slate and network growth prospects ahead. We are focused on building on our momentum to strengthen our strategic position, executing with financial discipline and continuing to provide the most immersive entertainment experience in the world." Now there's a leader who's definitely having his popcorn and eating it too!
