Get Ready for a Family Affair at the New York Film Festival
- Jul 29, 2025
Cue the drumroll because Jim Jarmusch’s latest film, “Father Mother Sister Brother,” is gearing up to be the star of the show at the 63rd annual New York Film Festival. With a cast boasting the likes of Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, and Adam Driver, this captivating family drama will be making its North American debut on October 3 at the iconic Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
Jarmusch, who wears both the director & writer hats for this project, brings an anthology to life that delves deep into the relationships adult children have with their parents. Let's break it down - the film is a triptych set in the present day. "Father" follows siblings Jeff and Emily, played by Driver and Mayim Bialik, who pay a visit to their recluse father in rural New Jersey. "Mother" revolves around sisters Lilith and Timothea, played by Krieps and Blanchett, reuniting with their reserved novelist mother in Dublin. Thirdly, “Sister Brother” trails twins Skye and Billy after a family tragedy takes them back to their apartment in Paris.
"I am so very proud of the long history of my work being presented at the NYFF, and am now super honored that my newest film ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ has been selected for this year’s Centerpiece,” said an elated Jarmusch. “The NYFF, the chosen church of my religion, has provided many of my greatest inspirations and revelations in its continuing celebration of the deep and diverse beauty of cinema.”

NYFF and Jarmusch go way back, with many of his films, like “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Down by Law,” “Mystery Train”, and “Only Lovers Left Alive” previously screened, and his artistic touch added to the festival's official poster in 2023. There is also a slew of other credits to his name which include “Dead Man,” “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai”, and “The Dead Don’t Die.”
NYFF's artistic director, Dennis Lim, couldn't hide his admiration for Jarmusch's latest, calling it "wise, generous, slyly funny, and enormously moving". "Father Mother Sister Brother", he gushes, is "one of his very best" and "distills everything we have come to love and value about this singular filmmaker’s work into one glorious triptych."
Before it graces Manhattan, "Father Mother Sister Brother" will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The New York Film Festival itself will be running from Sept. 26 through Oct. 13. And guess what's kicking off the 63rd edition? Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt.” It's going to be a showstopper!
