The title 'The White Devil' may sound ominous, but its lead is none other than Oscar-winning cinematographer, Robert Richardson. Graced with snowy white hair and an aura seemingly delivered by Mercury himself, Richardson is no stranger to the spotlight. In Jana Hojdová’s documentary, cinematic giants such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Oliver Stone share insights into Richardson’s genius, with a mixture of awe and warm-hearted nostalgia.

Kate Hudson may not embody the same legendary status, but her humorous but apt observation that one needs to "do a lot of psychedelics to see light the way he does", brings a playful side to the often solemn arena of cinematography. The cinematographer's life and work took a wild turn when Czech director Hojdová, fresh from film school and eager to connect with her idol, sends a fan letter to the American Society of Cinematographers asking for their help. The moment Richardson fuelled the flames of her ambition by responding directly, a series of correspondences began, turning the young graduate from a fan into a documentarian.

This unique, self-made connection results in a candid exploration of Richardson, his life, work, and personal issues. During the COVID lockdown of 2020, Hojdová bravely questions him in his Cape Cod mansion, revealing his often complex and formidable nature. The eccentric cinematographer opens up about personal woes including his troubled childhood, his mother's alcoholism, the mental struggles of his late brother, and his own failings as a father and husband. Richardson’s artistic life is thus portrayed as not only a pursuit of perfection but an escape route from personal hardships.

Lights, Camera... White Devil? Diving into the mystical brilliance of cinematographer, Robert Richardson

"Robert Richardson: The White Devil" isn't just a fawning celebration of a master cinematographer. It delves into the depths of his character, demystifying the man behind the camera. Heavyweights like Scorsese, Tarantino, and Stone are vocal about their admiration for the artist's perfectionism and quirks. They passionately discuss the craft that sets Richardson apart, from his love for crane shots to his laborious pursuit of technical precision.

But it's not all rosy. There are tales of rifts and clashes, like Stone's heartfelt recollection of their 11-year, 11-film partnership coming to an abrupt end. Tales of Richardson's harsh treatment toward his crew during the filming of 'Kill Bill' while working with Tarantino, also surface, shedding a stark light on the difficulties of working with such a determined artist.

While the documentary occasionally feels disjointed, its disarray is part of the charm. It humanizes Richardson, prompting a newfound appreciation for the man wielding the camera and capturing the art of life through his lens. Perhaps its restlessness captures the essence of its protagonist - a rockstar of the camera, an enigma wrapped in a riddle, and truly, 'The White Devil'.
