Sister Act on Streaming: A Dive Into Amazon's 'The Better Sister', Peacock's 'Long Bright River', and Netflix's 'Sirens'
- Jun 9, 2025
All of you TV buffs out there, brace yourselves! Popular streaming services have been dropping series that put a new spin on the sisterhood saga. Amazon's 'The Better Sister,' Netflix's 'Sirens,' and Peacock's 'Long Bright River,' introduce us to estranged sisters, each dealing with shared traumas, who join forces to decipher some external enigma tied to their past afflictions.
The intriguing part about these sisters are their dichotomy, i.e., one is portrayed as the "good" and the other as the "bad." But, plot twist! No sister is entirely an angel or devil. All have a redeeming backstory or a flaw buried beneath their accomplishments.
The twins in 'The Better Sister,' take us on an emotional roller coaster. Olivia Milch has adapted this from Alafair Burke's novel, bringing Jessica Biel as 'Chloe', the 'spotless' sister, and Elizabeth Banks as 'Nicky', the 'troublesome' one, in a murder mystery. Unfortunately, the plot gets incredibly complex, shifting the focus from characters to a tangled storyline.
Chloe is portrayed as the successful one, with an immaculate lifestyle, a thriving career, and her husband, Adam, a formidable lawyer. However, when she finds Adam's lifeless body in their house, things take a dark turn. So, enter quirky Nicky, and together, they try solving the murder while dealing with personal burdens.
While Biel plays the perfectionist Chloe, Banks has used her character's spontaneity to bring some humor to the table. Their unmistakable chemistry brings something more to the table, providing a detailed portrayal of a strained sisterly relationship.

Unfortunately, the focus on the sisters' relationship was a bit late in the game, and the murder mystery wasn't that gripping. Even Adam's death, which was supposed to be the crux of the plot, couldn't keep the audience hooked.
For a brief period, 'The Better Sister' did show potential with Chloe and Nicky grappling with societal double standards for women. However, the series soon transitioned into a clumsy legal thriller. The finale was a tad too focused on sewing up the story, leaving little room for exploring Chloe and Nicky's lives post the tragic incident.
Like 'Sirens' and 'Long Bright River,' 'The Better Sister' could have packed a stronger punch as a film, harnessing the star power of Biel and Banks. The desired outcome would be to concentrate on the sisterly bond more efficiently.
After all, isn't it ironic that a TV series should leave you wanting less of what it offers and more of what it doesn't? Although we'd like the possibility of 'The Better Sister' narrowing its focus toward the sisterly relationship, it seems we'll likely have to look for options elsewhere.
Apple TV+’s 'Bad Sisters' rises as the top contender in the sisterhood series with plenty of laughs, drama, and thrilling twists. If you fancy more sisterly tales with a touch of humor and mysteries, 'Bad Sisters' is an excellent recommendation.
