"Other Mommy" - Jessica Chastain's Spooky Return to the Matri-verse
- Oct 14, 2026
Prepare to hold onto your popcorn folks, because Jessica Chastain is back at it again in the Matri-verse! After her acclaimed roles in 2013's "Mama" and 2024's "Mothers' Instinct", she's plunging once more into the maternal uncanny with "Other Mommy", a delightfully shivery story about an eerie imaginary friend who's more like a BFF from Hell!
Under the captivating direction of Rob Savage, of "Host" and "The Bogeyman" fame, and a script tidy as a dollhouse from the keen pen of Nathan Elston, "Other Mommy" cleverly casts light on the turbulent lens of a youngster's world. The narrative gamely plays with the notion that kids are more perceptive than they are often given credit for, becoming finely tuned antenna to the secret whispers and ripples of disharmony reverberating in their homes. Our promising juvenile star, Arabella Olivia Clark, plays 7-year-old Bela who interestingly decodes the strained marriage of her career-driven mother, Ursula (Chastain) and her more attentive albeit melancholic father, Russell (Jay Duplass).
Rather than playing with her dolls, Bela spends her lonely hours with a far stranger playmate - "Other Mommy", who eerily resembles Ursula but comes off as much warmer and affectionate. Tales of her adorable doings, however, seem to belong to the past. As the film unfurls, "Other Mommy" appears far more haunting and sinister. A hint of a lost opportunity emerges here - we miss out on the dramatic buildup to the chill factor as the beastly babysitter moves quickly from frightening to ferocious.
While the movie certainly offers intriguing embellishments - a spectral entity capable of teleporting people and objects at will and the looming enigma around its motive to ensnare Bela's heart, the film loses steam with distractions like over-convenient plot devices and a lack of concrete mythology.

Credit where credit is due – Jessica Chastain steals the scenes with her chilling portrayal of “Other Mommy”, teetering elegantly between nurturing and nightmare. Her performance as the aloof, sometimes menacing Ursula effectively raises the bar for celeb moms everywhere. While the narrative does throw parents a curveball, it does finally land at an interesting but terribly familiar destination - the sometimes dream-shattering demands of parenting.
As the film takes an otherworldly walk through a familial minefield, there are glimpses of brilliance. Savage’s distinctive touches include evoking a compelling visual narrative with memorable shots, such as the portrait of the father-daughter bond depicted through a gap in a wall of blocks. Incoherent bits are balanced by such vivid storytelling that almost makes you expect a cameo by Chuck E. Cheese.
Unfortunately, much like a heart-pounding trailer that promises more than the movie delivers, “Other Mommy” straddles the line between profoundly fascinating and frustratingly vague. Piquant as the trailer might have been, the movie itself seldom lives up to the promise of fearsome fun or an emotional punch. However, if there's an "Other Other Mommy" lurking out there that can nail it, you can bet we’ll be the first ones in line!
