Madonna dropped a juicy bombshell in her recent chat with Interview magazine, sending ripples throughout the celebrity realm. A major fallout between her and Universal Pictures is what made the lights turn off on her eagerly-anticipated movie biopic. Was the studio not ready to roll out the red carpet for Madonna's life in cinema? Seems like it!

Universal Pictures, the winning bid in the hotly contested multi-studio auction of 2021, had bagged the rights to host Madonna's life on the big screen. Madonna - her pop queen majesty, was supposed to co-write and helm the director's chair. Talk about a double whammy! And there were big names in the mix, including Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson, the resourceful screenwriters, and even Julia Garner of "Ozark" fame who snagged the lead after a sizzling audition boot camp in 2022.

Speaking to Interview magazine, Madonna said, "I was set to make a movie about my life. My script occupied me for two years, and another two were spent with the Universal Studios team, juggling line producers and finances." But then the party ended. "Humongous life, humongous budget, you get it, right?" Madonna pointed out, "I mean, my life was no small affair."

But like many big-budget blockbuster dreams, this biopic apparently bit the dust when Universal couldn't wrap its head around the hefty price tag. Madonna, being the problem solver she is, even suggested filming in Serbia to cut costs. According to Madonna, Universal's response was less than enthusiastic, "They seemed to think Serbia was too much for me. And I was like, 'Did you even read the script? I know how to handle survival!'"

Caught between studios and spinning in limbo, good ol' Netflix decided to lend a helping hand. However, the road was not exactly smooth as she shared, "Figuring out a series is not the same as a movie. It's a whole other ball game." After months of stag doors with writers and showrunners who didn't click, Madonna said, "Thank heavens I have my music. I need to do what I'm born to."

Insiders had revealed to Variety earlier that the film was supposed to chart Madonna's journey from her early days in Michigan, right up to the 1998 "Ray of Light" release. But as they say, all is not lost. The biopic will survive, albeit in a fictional format, in “The Studio” Season 2 on Apple. Madonna and Garner have already had a taste of the silver screen, making appearances at the Venice Film Festival as part of Seth Rogen’s Emmy-winning comedy series. So while we may not see Madonna's life story as she envisioned it, we have this new project to look forward to.
