"Guardians of the Video Game" - Seoul Company Sees Game-Changing Possibilities in Animated Feature!
- Sep 1, 2026
Enter the realm of video games in a way you've never imagined before. Sounds thrilling, doesn’t it? You can thank the Seoul-based company, Finecut, for this journey into the beyond. Fresh from acquiring international sales rights for the 3D animated film "Guardians of the Video Game", which is itself based on a toe-curling, captivating Naver webtoon from Gasfard, Finecut is making waves in the entertainment industry.
If you didn't know, the webtoon had done quite well for itself, racking up 345 million views like a boss! And if that wasn't success enough, it was then transformed into a hugely popular mobile game on Google Play before leaping onto the silver screen as a mesmerizing 3D animated feature.
The film plants you smack-dab in the middle of a vibrant, family-friendly domain seemingly hiding beneath your favorite video games. The realm is cared for by a secret guild of guardians, who work under the radar to ensure every player's gaming experience is just right. The story centers around a guardian who, after being banished from the glossy world of 3D games, finds himself maneuvering a very unsuspecting hero around a pixelated RPG. All the while, he is striving to tackle and overcome a sinister plot that threatens both him and the game.
Could animated features possibly get any more thrilling? Hard to say! The creative genius behind this feature is none other than Uhm Young-sik. He's left his mark on "Running Man: Revengers", and "Yumi’s Cells" Season 1, as well as co-directing “Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs," a film that secured distribution in not 10, not 50, but a whopping 120 countries!

The film production is in the capable hands of Locus Animation, a renowned studio that has been involved with nifty little numbers like “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” and the aforementioned “Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs.” They seem to have a flair for bringing popular webtoons like “Barkhan” and “Denma” to life, much to the delight of fans.
As of now, "Guardians of the Video Game" is in the post-production stage, with plans to hit the big screens sometime in the last quarter of 2026. Expect the first-ever peeks of footage soon, potentially presented by Finecut during the Toronto market.
It's exciting times at Finecut, with many other titles gaining momentum. This includes "Long Long Night," which will hold its grand Toronto premiere soon, along with award-winning titles from director Hong Sangsoo and the Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight invited “Dora,” directed by July Jung. As the saying goes, let the games, or rather the animations, begin!
