David Goyer: A Blade Reunion & More from a Superhero Maestro
- Jun 24, 2025
Buckle up, superhero buffs! It appears that renowned screenwriter David Goyer is open to diving back into his vampire-slaying past. Known as the scribe behind the 1998 “Blade” film starring Wesley Snipes, “Man of Steel” (2013), the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016), Goyer shared with Variety that he's been subliminally nudged by fans, friends, and social media followers to lend a hand in the new "Blade" project.
“I might consider it because I love the character, and it sort of started my superhero career,” Goyer reflected. Although better known in DC’s universe now, Goyer began his journey in Marvel's cosmos. “I would consider it, it would be fun to return to that world… just for old time’s sake.”
Interestingly, Goyer had unofficially offered his services for the new iteration of "Blade" earlier, only to hear, as one often does in the cut-throat movie industry, words of appreciation from Marvel, but nothing more at that point. But who knows what the future holds?
Despite being mostly retired from the superhero arena, the thought of a sweet homecoming to his early work in a world of supernatural beings isn't totally off the cards. However, Goyer teases that he's now "99% done" with superheroes, the glimmer we see in that remaining one percent shouldn’t be dismissed so easily.

Presently, Goyer is juggling several projects under his Phantom Four production mantle. They include Apple TV+'s currently streaming "Murderbot," Netflix’s “The Sandman” premiering its second season in July, and "Foundation," another Apple TV show, making its season three debut mid-July.
“The Sandman” has garnered significant attention due to controversy over its author Neil Gaiman. But as Goyer says, the focus should be on the work itself. After all, several individuals worked hard to bring the complicated story to life. Goyer also pointed out the unique narrative structure of the series: the source material often required several comic book issues to fill just one episode.
Another anticipated project on Goyer's docket is the third season of Apple’s “Foundation,” which is primed to focus on a character called 'The Mule.' As he navigates the series' development, Goyer aims to attract not just regular science fiction fans but also those who wouldn't usually consider themselves enthusiasts of the genre.
Apart from his thriving TV series lineup, Goyer is looking beyond the trodden superhero and science-fiction path, although a remake of “The Blob” with director David Bruckner is on the horizon. “I’ve got two new things I’m working on, neither of which, unfortunately, I can talk about yet,” Goyer hinted. While he's straying away from the familiar grounds of superheroes, sci-fi, and fantasy, he guarantees that the upcoming projects will still retain "some genre elements.” After all, it's still David Goyer we're talking about!
