Ever heard the saying, "knowing too much spoils the fun?" Well, Jerskin Fendrix, maestro composer for the smashing new movie "Bugonia," probably agrees - because he created the entire score without knowing a single inkling about the film. Yes, you read that right. Now again, rewind, marinate in awe, and proceed.

Fendrix and director Yorgos Lanthimos, a formidable duo in movie land since 2023, worked on that basis for this project. In a break from their usual M.O., Lanthimos had told Fendrix not to read the script or watch the South Korean film the script was based on, "Save the Green Planet!" And for all side-splitting hilarity it caused, Fendrix didn't even throw a fit!

For context, our star composer frequently pored over scripts and conceptual art while creating scores for previous collaborations like "Poor Things" and "Kinds of Kindness." But this time, Fendrix got nothing but three not-so-magical words: bees, basement, and spaceship. And ironically, for those of us who've seen the knockout film, it makes perfect sense!

Let's talk movie details (without spilling too much, but hey, spoiler alert!). Emma Stone hits the big screen as the head honcho of a pharmaceutical company who ends up kidnapped by Teddy and his cousin Don, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. The dynamic duo tries to make her confess that she's an alien - yes, your everyday normal alien accusation - while sequestering her in a basement. And hey, just a side note, Teddy also happens to love bees and runs a ranch house that's teeming with them.

Fendrix embraced the challenge head-on, chucking himself into thorough research on the bigger picture these three scrappy words hinted at. He brainstormed and explored potential connective links between them, quite like piecing together a cosmic puzzle!

On finding the score behind bees, Fendrix says, "Bees have an intriguing and familiar sound that plays a prominent role in the film." That, paired with his fascination for geometrics, and I quote, "Honeycomb is such a big part of imagery around bees. That's very representative of how uniform, equal, and complicated they are as a social structure," played a significant part in the composition.

Fendrix crafted a basement score that echoed an "apocalypse film", highlighting the intense and dramatic stakes of our leading lady being an actual alien species, an Andromedan, looking over humanity since time began. And yes, folks, Teddy was right all along!

Ultimately, however, Lanthimos surprised everyone by using the synthesized music for the film's final spaceship scene, establishing an ambiance that was peaceful yet alien at the same time. Reflecting on it all, Fendrix acknowledged that his composition approach would have been different had he known the film's plot in advance. But hey, we're not complaining - Yorgos' direction and Fendrix's uniquely crafted music made for a truly interstellar movie experience!
