Pull up a chair and get cozy as we embark on a joyride through the wacky minds of Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell, actors who welcomed us into their worlds of prosthetics, penguins, and Batman. Each having portrayed Oswald Cobblepot, more notoriously known as the Penguin, they share a unique bond and a surprising friendship of old.

Flashback to 1992, DeVito swam into our lives as the Penguin in Tim Burton's chillingly Gothic "Batman Returns". Fast forward to 2022, Farrell snagged the coveted villain role in "The Batman", Matt Reeves' gritty reimagination also spinning a TV spinoff titled - you guessed it - "The Penguin". Don’t think DeVito’s sitting idle though; he's gearing up to dazzle us as Frank, the incorrigible, outlandish character in the seventeenth installment of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".

The duo has a friendly banter about their shared character, and it's easy to imagine them sipping beers in DeVito's backyard, reminiscing about their Penguin experiences. DeVito recalls taking time to perfect his peculiar Penguin look, toning down the initial five- to six-hour-long makeup process to a more manageable three-and-a-half-hour appointment. Both of them cheerfully downplayed the long hours in the makeup chair; a bit of music, some java, and it's just part of a day’s work.

Their days were not ‘all work and no play’. DeVito and Farrell were keen on preserving their sanity amidst the grueling schedules and yes, there's something about spaghetti sauce and unruly penguins! For DeVito, cooks on set were at his beck and call, scrambling to stir bubbling sauces between takes in what surely qualifies as the oddest work requests ever. The duo then humorously moved on to the topic of the performing penguins, something only DeVito had to deal with, even going down to the San Diego Zoo for a meet-and-greet to really dive into the character.

Batman's Dark Adversaries Unmasked: A Chat with Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell

Our friendly banter leaps from Batman's sombre universe and touches down in the anarchy of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". Farrell nudges DeVito, curious about his role in the long-running TV show, hinting that perhaps Oz’s darkness could use a dose of Frank’s chaotic flair. DeVito can't help but chuckle at the comparison; the shows might not be similar, but the raw, captivating characters he brought to life in both definitely are.

The conversation shifts again and in no time they’re discussing Zoë Kravitz and Michelle Pfeiffer's interpretations of Catwoman, revealing more layers of their Batman experiences. DeVito’s stories about the goddess-like Pfeiffer adds an extra layer of hilarity to Oswald's lustful Penguin. The camaraderie continues, leading to the big question: Would they ever play the Penguin again? For DeVito, the answer is an emphatic yes. He speaks fondly of the creative freedom that he savoured on the set of "Batman Returns".

Finally, the infamous Batman is discussed. DeVito's nemesis was the marvelous Michael Keaton, while Farrell was up against Robert Pattinson. Both Penguins, their faces hidden behind layers of prosthetics, saw their respected Batmen as symbols of power, the unreachable stars of Gotham's society, the penthouses they could never afford. From the operatic to the gangster, the divinely surreal to the painfully real, they transform into everyone's favourite villain, armed with ambition, desire, and a healthy dash of charm. The clash of two titans has never been as endearing as when brought to life by these two marvellously entertaining actors.
