Just when you thought "A Minecraft Movie" was ruling the box office, up steps this underdog - well, really more like an underdemon. The one stealing all the popcorn? "Ne Zha II" – the smashing sequel to the 2019 Chinese animated sensation.

Topping charts and breaking records, "Ne Zha II" has swiped the crown and the cash, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of all time and the most successful animated film ever. It's even raked in a jaw-dropping $2 billion!

Now, if this information has you scratching your head because you don't recall seeing it in your local mall's multiplex, you're not alone. The film had a limited U.S. release earlier this year. But fear not, fellow movie buffs! A24, ever the champion of cinema-goers, is bringing it back, this time in English. IMAX, 3D, premium screens - they've got your visual needs covered.

"Ne Zha II" isn't just about killer graphics though. Expect an action-packed plot, vibrant characters, and a healthy sprinkling of gags that would make even your five-year-old cousin smirk. It's a roller-coaster ride of a plot where you might just need a fellow moviegoer to give you a quick story breakdown.

The sequel picks up right after the events of the first film. Follow the adventures of demon boy Ne Zha (voice of Griffin Puatu) and warrior prince Ao Bing (voice of Aleks Le) as they navigate hilarious body swopping scenarios a la Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin in “All of Me”. Their trials and tribulations lead them into epic showdowns with gods, dragons, demons, and an array of beastly warriors.

Director-screenwriter Yu Yang, aka Jiaozi, stays true to his form from the first film - bigger, longer, and faster! Expect towering battles, a revolving door of characters, and lots of fun slapstick. And just a heads up: there's really no such thing as 'too many fart jokes' in the universe of "Ne Zha II".

Adult fans of fantasy might find the humor a tad juvenile, but the visuals are spectacular enough that they'll forgive the film's low-brow humor. It's also noteworthy that, barring Michelle Yeoh who lends her voice to Ne Zha's mother Lady Yin, the English-language cast features unsung talent, so you won't hear the typical voices of Hollywood heavyweights.

So, whether you’re an animation aficionado, a lover of fantasy, or just a big kid at heart, brace yourself for the wild ride that is "Ne Zha II".
