Our story follows a young German gal named Franny (played by fresh face Naomi Cosma) who lands in the slightly offbeat heartland of New Mexico in 2001 to attend high school for an academic year in Las Cruces, bunking with a local family, all before the shadow of 9/11 descends. Director-writer Katharina Rivilis clearly sprinkles her own exchange student memories throughout this vibrant debut.

Franny's initial adventures in America are made up of pretty ordinary fare – making new friends, seeing new sights, experiencing minor heartbreaks - you know, the usual teenage business. However, what makes it special is the magic hour cinematography and a mashup of soundscapes that will make you feel the bizarre charm of an unfamiliar western landscape through Franny's European eyes. And thanks to Rivilis' skill in directing her non-professional cast who improvised their dialogues, it feels raw, real and totally suited for a young adult crowd.

Franny, a East German native who's seen the Wall come down, isn't the typical naive foreign student. She's sharp, observant, and senses something amiss in her host family, the Garcias, almost as soon as her feet hit Albuquerque. From the couple’s odd behavior- like leaving their kids in the car for hours to hit the casino- to Garcia's dubious reasons behind fostering Patty, Franny’s Spidey senses are sure tickling.

A disagreement over friends and missing belongings eventually see our heroine pack her bags and move to the abode of a kind local who conveniently is also a staff member at Franny's high school. This family is noticeably more, well, comfortable, with a pool out back and a much more leisurely approach to parenting.

Unfamiliar Territory: A Charming German Exchange Student’s American Odyssey

As Franny navigates school life and widens her social circle, we meet Sam (Bianca Dumais), Franny's contemporary with an unearned reputation, and the innocent Ida (Rebecca Schulz, a former Rivilis collaborator), another German exchange student. However, it’s the charismatic Elliot (David Flores) who steals the show - and Franny's heart - with his dreamy looks, band singer vocals, and a hint of bad boy rebellion.

Amidst these emotional waters, Franny finds herself adapting to peculiar American habits and post-9/11 patriotism, impressed on her without Rivilis resorting to cliché "ignorant American" stereotypes. Rather, we get a memorable glimpse into a class debate on foreign policy or lack thereof - a stark contrast to the apathetic, amuse-me culture prevalent in today's society.

Eventually, Rivilis' film transforms into a nostalgic trip down memory lane - a snapshot of the fleeting era where teens would actually hang out in person instead of being collectively hypnotized by screens. Such an authentic, heartfelt slice of teenage Americana-those indeed were the simple days, my friends.
