"The Man I Love", An 80s-NY Drama to Premiere at Cannes
- Apr 26, 2026
Hello movie fans! Get ready for a delicious slice of drama, heading straight from the Cannes Film Festival to French theaters, courtesy of Alexandre Mallet-Guy’s company Memento. What highly-anticipated drama, you might ask? It's none other than Ira Sachs' latest piece, "The Man I Love," featuring the mesmerizing Rami Malek, fresh off his Oscar win, and the ever-talented Tom Sturridge.
"The Man I Love" is a sighing love letter to the bohemian rhapsody that was late '80s New York. Malek breathes life into the charismatic Jimmy George, an impresario in the theater world, who, despite facing the inevitable reality of death, ventures into a compelling quest to experience life, longing, and love one last time. As wonderfully tender as poignant, this drama pieces together a heartfelt image of a clique of artists and friends, for whom creativity is their lifeline. The script birthed from the creative alliance of Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias, isn't merely an ode to the era. Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach join in to complete the heart-touching ensemble.
Fans of Sachs will be pleased to know that "The Man I Love" heralds his grand return to the Cannes competition. The movie is created by Big Creek Projects, out of good old US of A, with a helping hand from Saïd Ben Saïd’s SBS Productions across the pond in France. This collaboration notches another success for MK2 Films and Memento, who previously joined forces on Cannes-winning flicks such as Jafar Panahi’s "It Was Just an Accident" and Joachim Trier’s "Sentimental Value."

But what is it exactly about "The Man I Love" that captivated Alexandre Mallet-Guy’s attention? In his words, “Ira Sachs delivers a universal work that speaks above all of unwavering love and resilience.” He goes on to celebrate its stirring combination of modesty and gentleness, which adorns this otherwise tragic tale with an extraordinary wave of emotion.
As if this was not enough to get our film-loving hearts racing, Mallet-Guy will also be gracing the Cannes Film Festival with Asghar Farhadi’s "Parallel Tales", a film he co-produced with Farhadi and David Levine at Anonymous Content. It's cinematic gold coming our way, folks, and we can't wait!
