Of Wigs and Rebellion: Jennifer Aniston's Battle on 'Horrible Bosses' Set
- Aug 19, 2025
Who would've thought, right? Beloved actress Jennifer Aniston, known worldwide for her golden locks, once duked it out with Warner Bros. to switch up her hair game for the 2011 comedy smash “Horrible Bosses.”
That's right! In a recent heart-to-heart with Vanity Fair, Aniston shared how she took on the big guns in the studio to wear a brunette wig for her role in the movie. The studio was all for that iconic blonde hairdo that she's widely recognized for, but the 'Friends' alumnus had a different vision for her character.
Aniston reminisced, “I fought for that wig. That was not an easy battle.” You bet, it wasn't! The studio's main contention against her brunette aspirations? They were scared audiences might not recognize Aniston if she strayed too far from her golden-haired route. But as she voiced out in her defense to them - "That's kind of the point! I still think it might look like a little bit like me. But I’m glad I fought for it and stuck to my guns.”
In “Horrible Bosses,” we got to see Aniston break away from her quintessential "girl next door" image and sizzle up the screen as the audacious Dr. Julia Harris, a dentist with a tad too much interest in her assistant, played by Charlie Day. This successful R-rated comedy, along with 2013’s “We’re the Millers,” interestingly showcased Aniston in roles that purposely steered clear of her typical on-screen vibe.

Reflecting on how she adored shaking up her persona, Aniston added, “It was so fun to play something like this because it’s so far away from anything that I am. That’s what the director liked. It’s so much not what you would expect from [me]. That was the fun of it. That’s what made it more creatively exciting for me obviously.”
Joining Aniston in the “Horrible Bosses” cast were Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx. The film proved to be a comic powerhouse, earning just over $200 million worldwide. Hoping to recapture the comedy magic, Aniston along with the majority of the original team, returned for the 2014 sequel, “Horrible Bosses 2.”
So, there you have it – Aniston's stand for her brunette wig that, in the end, added another interesting layer to her hilarious character in “Horrible Bosses.” And if you want to hear more about her fun wigs-wars, check out her full video interview with Vanity Fair.
