Netflix's "Too Much to Ask" Eyes the Oscars

Ready to get in the tickle-your-ears kind of mood? Grab some popcorn and Fuzzy Socks! Netflix's supercalifragilistic new animated feature "Ray Gunn" has more in store than just eye-popping visuals. The streaming giant is planning to elbow its way into the Oscar run with "Too Much To Ask"- a dazzling original song from the film. Lights, Camera, Action, Oscars!

Helmed by maestro Brad Bird, "Ray Gunn" transports us to Metropia, a mind-bogglingly immense city parked in an alternate timeline of 1939. Brad weaves a thrilling tale featuring our cool-cat private eye, Raymond Gunn, who tackles aliens, uncovers murder mysteries, and encounters a multimedia sweetheart called Venus Nova. Lending their voices to the film are Hollywood's own haute celebrities, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, and Tom Waits.

"Too Much To Ask” warbles its way into our hearts as one of the three original tracks penned and nurtured by none other than the Grammy-winning serenader, Kimbra. In the film, this heartfelt verse is sung beautifully by Johansson as Venus embarks on her shining moment. "It’s during this time that we really get to know her. We hear all that she's been yearning to express," Kimbra reveals.

Embodying Venus, Kimbra reflects on her own journey in the ever-dazzling spotlight of the music industry. She confesses, "There's a similarity between Venus and me. Despite enjoying commercial success, I’ve strived to keep my work genuine, always bringing a bit of soul to it- music born from heartbreak.”

The climax of Venus’ musical journey unfolds without giving much away; our Metropian pop queen decides to wear her heart on her sleeve, demanding the freedom to express her authentic self- her only plea is, "is that too much to ask?" Absolutely not, Venus!

The track was breathed into life at London's legendary Abbey Road Studios in the company of the London Symphony Orchestra. Kimbra doffs her hat to the soulful Billie Holiday and the legendary Aretha Franklin, whilst drizzling in a dash of "Twin Peaks" mystery.

Adding another feather to her cap, she teasingly contrasts this with another track in the film called “Innocent”, describing it as a poppy earworm, quite distinct from the jazzy smooth vibes of “Too Much To Ask”. She adds, “Hey, we’ve all got that song that we’ve loved to hate, because it’s just that fantastic!”

By now, you must be dying to know more about Venus’ musical allures. Johansson, who brings Venus to life, “tends to sing on a lower register…and getting to explore different sides of herself as a vocalist was thrilling”. Enthused by Johansson’s dedication, Kimbra says,"Scarlett transformed herself into this character and made Venus a character to remember.”
