If you're in the mood for a concoction of thrills, creativity, and slightly surreal humor, then "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" is your next go-to movie. Keeping whispers of Agatha Christie's genius alive, the film features an underpinning of wiles and wit, akin to its predecessor "Knives Out", which managed to slap viewers right in their appreciation of a classy whodunit. These films connect us to the lovable sleuth of our childhood, to the giddy anticipation of unraveling a cleverly staged crime.

This latest saga merges the grandeur of early renditions with relatable human elements. The storyline transports us to a small town in New York, where Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, played flawlessly by Josh Brolin, rules his twisted theocratic kingdom with a fiery sword of sermon. His sudden death, no spoiler here folks, pivots the film into a splendid fold of mystery, suspense, and philosophical debate as we question whodunit?

While the film's central plot revolves around a murder mystery, it also puts a satirical spin on current political dynamics and societal beliefs. Monsignor Wicks symbolizes the larger-than-life persona of Trump, while his devoted followers mirror his sturdy base. Additionally, the film draws from literary giants such as John Dickson Carr and G.K. Chesterton, intricately weaving themes of reasoning and faith, love, and hate, concocting a masterpiece that keeps you on your toes.

The film owes its captivating narrative to Rian Johnson's visionary direction and Josh O’Connor's extraordinary acting skills. O’Connor brings to life Rev. Jud Duplenticy, a former boxer-turned-priest-learning-the-ropes, with an appealing blend of sincerity and mischief. But the real spice starts when Jud crosses paths with the imperious Wicks and finds himself in a ferociously competitive bunch of Wicks' followers, creating a riveting backstory of sins and retributions.

The movie dips into humor as Wicks confesses about his frequent masturbatory activities. Johnson knows how to keep it humorous, without turning it into a comedy. Thanks to Brolin, the character never devolves into mockery. He maintains the chilling aura of a man who has his following under a weird charm and meets his maker in an intriguingly puzzling fashion that directly references classic murder mystery tropes.

Benoit Blanc, played by the ever so charming Daniel Craig, prods at the mystery with his signature Southern drawl and an unhealthy obsession with rationality. His uber-detective mode resonates with Sherlock Holmes, but with a touch of mysticism that is surprisingly in sync with O'Conner's altruistic Jud.

With Blanc and Jud joining forces, the script dives into a whirlpool of confessions and revelations, offering an impeccable narrative filled with suspense and surprises, elegantly exploring themes of guilt, greed, and divinity. Johnson is clearly having a ball with the film, but he also infuses a spiritual element into this gripping crime thriller, making "Wake Up Dead Man" an unparalleled triumph in the "Knives Out" series. And we can't help but wonder, can he outdo himself?
