"Melania: A Hit or a Miss?"
- Feb 3, 2026
As the sun rose on Saturday, Melania Trump couldn't wait to share some exciting news on social media. Her documentary, "Melania," which premiered Friday night, was making quite a remarkable debut.
"Melania" - Not just another movie. It was ringing in record-breaking accolades as the highest debut for a documentary in the past decade (concert films aside), confirmed by Variety. Further adding icing to the cake, the CinemaScore echoed the audience's sentiment by awarding the film an "A."
Sounds like a roaring success, right? But hang on, not everyone was singing the film's praises.
You see, while audiences were lining up to catch a glimpse of Melania's world, critics were less than impressed, specifically with a critic score of a measly 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. But let’s not lose heart; every dark cloud has a silver lining, and, in this case, that silver lining was the audience score on the same platform, which hummed a different tune at a glowing 99%.
Audiences were swarming to screenings in Dallas, Orlando, Tampa, Phoenix, Houston, and Atlanta, proving to be top markets for the film.

Nevertheless, Variety’s film critic, Owen Gleiberman, was firmly on the unimpressed side. He noted that "Melania" felt more like "a piece of state-sanctioned propaganda out of 1960s Communist China," according to his critique.
"By the time ‘Melania’ gets to the Inaugural festivities, the film surrenders to a series of rituals, which feels fitting since the filmmaking itself is so ritualistic," Gleiberman said. He went on to argue that the documentary, akin to the Trump regime, is essentially a meticulously crafted reality show devoted to keeping reality at bay.
Masterminded by Brett Ratner, “Melania” details the First Lady's experience in the 20 days before Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration. Despite the critics’ nay-saying, the documentary bagged $2.9 million on its opening day and is projected to see $8.1 million by Sunday. A pleasant surprise, considering initial estimates were between $3 million and $5 million. Amazon MGM didn’t just throw a few pennies around; they invested $40 million in this film.
The film marks a comeback for director Ratner after his career hit a roadblock following sexual assault allegations made against him in 2017. The White House has reportedly requested him to direct "Rush Hour 4" for Paramount. So, whether it’s a hit or a miss is still up for debate, but one thing is clear - "Melania" has made some noise.
