Get Ready to Set Sail Again: Disney's Live-Action 'Moana' Reveals Dwayne Johnson as Maui
- Mar 26, 2026
There's simply no other way to put it, so we'll go ahead and say, "You’re welcome!" Disney has finally given fans a taste of what's to come by sharing the first peek at Dwayne Johnson as Maui in the live-action 'Moana' remake. As you might recall, Johnson lent his voice to the iconic demigod in the original 2016 animated film, where spunky teenager Moana set off on a thrilling mission to save her island village of Motunui.
Fresh-faced Catherine Laga’aia is stepping up to portray our headstrong heroine in the highly-anticipated live-action version. Auli’i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana from both the 2016 release and its sequel eight years later, is making waves behind the camera as an executive producer. She's joined by a powerhouse crew that includes director Thomas Kail, and producers Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Charles Newirth, and even Lin-Manuel Miranda. What a team, right?
Rounding out our live-action 'Moana' cast are John Tui as Moana's father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams as her mom, Sina; and Rena Owen taking on the role of lovable Gramma Tala. The screenplay is brought to life by Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush - the duo behind the 2016 'Moana' script we fell in love with.

We're also thrilled to tell you that the tunes you couldn't get out of your head are coming back - Mark Mancina, Miranda, and Opetaia Foa’i are all in to work their magic on the music for the live-action version, with Mancina on board to score the film.
The animated version of ‘Moana’ wasn't just a hit with the kiddos - critics and box-office sales proved that this story had universal appeal, with the film scooping up an incredible $643 million worldwide (and that's not even adjusted for inflation!). The beautiful animation and soulful music earned it an Oscar nomination for best animated feature, with Miranda also snagging a nomination for the ever-sticky earworm, "How Far I'll Go."
Disney's live-action ‘Moana’ is launching onto theater shores on July 10. To tide you over, why not enjoy a little sneak peek of Dwayne Johnson fully embodying Maui in the trailer?
