Calling all horror junkies out there, you might want to brace yourselves! If you thought "Five Nights at Freddy's" was a bit of a letdown, unfortunately, its sequel, "Five Nights at Freddy's 2," might make you cringe rather than shriek. The movie makes us question whether it's frightening in the good way, or just darkly amusing in a 'what-am-I-watching' kind of way.

Unleashing those enormous, creaky, robotic mascots from the ruins of everyone's not-so-favourite haunt, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, director Emma Tammi has once again spiced up our screens with PG-13 horror. Is it nightmare-worthy, though? Nope, not really. More like 'nightmare-lite'.

Let's meet Chica, our friendly animatronic chick, voiced by Megan Fox, who boasts bedroom eyes and a seemingly appropriate party shirt. Her stalking of a high-school teacher, played by Wayne Knight, to squeeze out his brains might sound horrific, but in reality (or the lack thereof), it's an underwhelming scene, which has its guts cut out and punctuated with tad-too-jokey dialogues.

Oh, and let's not forget about the convoluted backstory. A sinister costume-clad serial killer in 1982, a helpless girl turned hero, Charlotte (played by Audrey Lynn-Marie), who loses her life to a cause, and then returns as a vengeful spirit. A melded demon, awkward romance, a jinxed pizza party from the yesteryears-- it's all happening here! But, compliments have to go to the good old Scott Cawthorn (the genius behind Freddy's video-game franchise) for, well, making things happen.

Remember Josh Hutcherson who played Mike, the former security guard lost in the surrealism of Freddy's world? He's back, along with Piper Rubio as Abby, the little girl who befriends the eerie mascots. Yes, there's a twist in the tale as the shiny, towering mascots seem overshadowed by their dusty, basement-dwelling prototypes. Why, you ask? Well, aren't the best horror plots stuffed with inexplicable details?

Back in 2021, the indie horror film "Willy's Wonderland" was perceived as a satirical spin on "Five Nights at Freddy's". It featured some truly nasty mascot attacks and a silent-yet-menacing Nicolas Cage. Fast forward to now, we have "Five Nights at Freddy's 2", which may possibly accumulate $60 million this week despite its rough edges and haphazard story.

The gamer's mantra remains – service over substance! So, go ahead and get your popcorn (and your friends' too), sit back, and enjoy this schlocky misfire of a horror sequel with the lights on. Not because it's spooky, but because, well, you definitely don't want to miss out on the animatronic ironies.

OUR RATING

4 / 10

The sequel to "Five Nights at Freddy's" serves up more animatronic shenanigans, but fails to deliver the chills.
