Break out the popcorn and get ready to sing along! The phenomenal success of "KPop Demon Hunters", the animated blockbuster from Sony that had us all dancing to its catchy tunes, could soon be amplified. Early buzz hints at a sequel currently being negotiated between Sony and Netflix, the platform where the original was a streaming sensation.

"KPop Demon Hunters" knocked audiences off their feet and, on Tuesday, outshone "Red Notice" to become Netflix's most-streamed film ever, boasting an incredible 236 million views worldwide. Such was its enchanting appeal that it spun four tracks into the Billboard Top 10 simultaneously - a feat never before achieved on the Hot 100.

The breathtaking success of "KPop Demon Hunters", the brainchild of Sony under its partnership with Netflix, led to an unprecedented departure from Netflix's digital-only stance. The animated feel-good flick scored a one-off theatrical release across 1,700 North American screens, where fans could partake in joyous sing-along sessions. Despite being only a two-day event, the movie led the domestic box office over the last weekend of August, surpassing summer favorites like "Weapons" and "Freakier Friday".

Enthused by its runaway hit, Netflix is now in overdrive mode planning multiple ways to make the most of this unexpected triumph. As part of its efforts to leverage the movie’s overwhelming popularity, the company is setting up "KPop Demon Hunters" themed stores in Philadelphia and Dallas before the holiday season. This innovative move is impressively swift, given that store designs have been in progress for a long time.

Speaking with Variety, Maggie Kang, the co-director of the film alongside Chris Appelhans, expressed her optimism about a sequel. She was particularly excited about highlighting the backgrounds of Huntr/x's other members Zoey and Mira, beyond the lead singer Rumi.

Kang mentioned, “We’ve laid a lot of groundwork for potential backstory. There's a multitude of unanswered questions and unexplored territories - constraints imposed by the film's 85-minute runtime. Whilst this was Rumi’s tale, Zoey’s and Mira’s backgrounds – which almost made it into the movie – demand their cinema-worthy narratives."

Sony's ongoing negotiations with Kang and Appelhans for their return to the sequel were first disclosed by Puck. So, fans, here's keeping our fingers crossed for another foot-tapping, heart-pounding adventure with our favourite KPop starlets!
