"Batgirl" Star Ruby Rose Calls Out "Christy" Star Sydney Sweeney
- Nov 15, 2025
Scintillating news from Tinsel-town, folks - Ruby Rose, globally recognized from "Batgirl" and seriously binge-worthy "Orange Is the New Black," recently took to Threads to pointedly critique fellow actor Sydney Sweeney. At the heart of Rose's ire is "Christy," Sweeney's recent biopic chronicling the life of wrestling sensation Christy Martin, which barely grappled $1.3 million at the box office against its $15 million budget.
In a candid post, Rose expressed her disappointment by labeling Sweeney a "cretin." She reminisced about the original script, calling it "life changing,” which had her geared up to play the character Cherry. She emphasized the authenticity of the original cast, highlighting their personal experiences with the core material and their identification as gay, which, in her view, contributed significantly to the tone of the story.
Rose then castigated Sweeney's PR for spinning the film's underwhelming performance as an endeavour "for the people" and fiercely challenged this claim stating, “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us".
High on Rose's list of grievances was Sweeney's reported affiliation with the Republican Party, which she neither denied nor confirmed. Rose’s comments followed and drew upon reports of Sweeney registering as a Republican in Florida amidst Trump’s triumphant victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Race.
In the wake of Rose's digital tirade, reporters at Variety contacted Sweeney's representatives and Black Bear-the company responsible for Christy's production and distribution-for a response. They also reached out to Ruby Rose's reps for additional context. Unnamed sources revealed to Variety that Rose’s attachment to the project ended before Black Bear hopped on board for "Christy's" development.

The biopic features direction from David Michôd and has Ben Foster as co-star. Its narrative threads a gripping tale of Christy Martin's journey towards wrestling fame, while elucidating the turbulence she endured due to her coach-turned-husband's abusive demeanor. Despite the underwhelming opening figures, Variety's resident critic Owen Gleiberman lauded Sweeney's performance and characterized the film as a vivid depiction of domestic violence.
In the aftermath of the film's rocky opening weekend, Sweeney set the record straight via Instagram, explaining that the significance of the project transcends numbers. She emphasized that “Christy” signifies survival, courage, and hope, and is aimed striking at the heart of domestic violence which the film was created to raise awareness about. “Thank you to everyone who saw, felt and believed and will believe in this story for years to come," Sweeney stated. "If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded."
Despite the initial mise en scene, “Christy” continues its theatrical run nationwide-courtesy of Black Bear. Stay tuned, folks! It's never dull in Hollywood!
