Amanda Seyfried Sees a Sunny Third Mamma Mia Movie on the Horizon
- Nov 22, 2025
How about a third round of infectious ABBA hits, breathtaking Grecian views, and an ensemble cast that keeps you laughing and dancing? If Amanda Seyfried has her way, "Mamma Mia 3" is as good as green-lit, featuring a sunny future and some fresh young faces.
The Oscar-nominated star has spilled the beans with Entertainment Tonight on her hopes and vision for a potential third Mamma Mia movie. She's previously warmed to the idea of pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter becoming part of the cast and lately has had her sights set on her "The Housemaid" co-star Sydney Sweeney, known for her riveting performances, to join the Mamma Mia family.
Quizzed about a potential Mamma Mia 3 at the prestigious Governors Awards, Seyfried seemed all but sure, stating, “Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure ‘Mamma Mia 3’ is a done deal.”
The previous Mamma Mia journey took us down memory lane, serving as a prequel to the original story. Seyfried anticipates "Mamma Mia 3" picking up from where we left off with her character, Sophie, now amid newer and fresher faces. Carpenter, she suggests, could play a certain long-lost family member, keeping fans on their toes.

Delving into her character, Seyfried excitedly shared, “I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” and added, “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn't seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”
Though the official go-ahead for a third Mamma Mia film isn't public yet, we have a seal of assurance from the producer, Judy Craymer, who revealed the existence of a written script. Seyfried gives fans a likely scenario, sharing, “I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.”
With Seyfried eager for a sequel, it appears Sydney Sweeney is on the same boat. Previously expressing her interest in the franchise, she shared with Variety in 2023, “I’ve always wanted to go to Greece. I love ‘Mamma Mia’ - something like that would be really fun.”
As we're left in anticipation, one thing is certain, if and when Mamma Mia 3 happens, it promises to be a hit of nostalgic tunes, fun loving characters, and a journey to a tropical paradise.
