"Death Boom": The Explosive New Doc Shaking Up the Billion-Dollar Death Care Industry
- Jun 7, 2026
A provocative new documentary, cheekily dubbed "Death Boom", is ready to drop the mic on the billion-dollar death care industry. This eye-opener, set to make its grand debut at the Tribeca Festival in New York on June 9, navigates the murky waters of the death care sector, unraveling its predictable (and not-so predictable) contours.
Helming the film is the talented Jessica Chandler, who is scrutinizing the major conundrums surrounding those last choices we'll ever make and digging deep into the looming 'death boom'. For the uninitiated, the 'death boom' predicts a surge over the next decade and a half, where over a million Baby Boomers are expected to shuffle off this mortal coil.
You'd probably think that the industry professionals would be ready to accommodate this demographic shift. But Chandler exclaims otherwise, hinting that our funeral systems may be caught napping. In the words of the film's official blurb, "As morgues overflow and wallets empty, a broken, billion-dollar industry is exposed. But better options exist."

Let's not dampen the mood too much though. The intriguing teaser promises that "Death Boom" isn't all doom and gloom. Rather, it's a unexpectedly uplifting deep-dive into the business of death that reveals market titans and intrepid voices leading a ground-breaking movement. Brace yourself for a bit of pitch-black humour too.
Lending his voice as the narrator, and also appearing in the documentary, is "Ice Cream Man" and "Thanksgiving" director Eli Roth. A gaggle of eminent filmmakers, including none other than Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Phillip Watson, Sean McKittrick, and Raymond Mansfield stand as the producer line-up for this rousing venture. DiCaprio brings his expertise from having produced critically acclaimed works more numerous than one's fingers and toes, namely “A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough,” “The Lake,” “Sleepwalker,” “Yanuni,” “Snow Leopard Sisters,” “Checkpoint Zoo,” “Path of the Panther” among others.
"Death Boom" is Chandler's sophomore documentary venture her first being "A Fine State This Is" which retold the tale of Fargo Deborah Whitman, an artist grappling with dissociative personality disorder, released in 2003. The industrious duo, Chandler and Roth, not only direct but also produce, joined by executive producer Edward H. Hamm Jr. This robust production is a collaborative effort of QC Entertainment, The Horror Section and Appian Way. Buckle up and prepare to be hit with the trailer below, folks.
